I am sorry for your loss.

So, now I am working as a collections officer. Since it is call center, everyday now, I hear people's problems. Sometimes, so sad that it would break your heart. Like the other day I spoke to this 87 year old man, who lives in country side, his wife is suffering from cancer and he has no money, so, he has to apply for bankruptcy, and he had no one to help him. The call went on for 25 minutes (usually they are meant to be between 4-5 minutes long). I listened to him, let him vent out, after all what else could I do, I guess sometimes some people just need to be heard, someone they can talk to, to be just heard. After wrapping the call, I requested a break, I went out for a while, thought about the old man and soon forgot about it. Until yesterday, when I got the same call back in my dialler, I realised that he was the same person I spoke with a  while ago( since, I could see my previous notes) Obviously he had no idea that he had spoken with me earlier. So, I continued the call as per usual and asked the customer if there was a reason for delay...customer advised that his wife passed away and he has now applied for bankruptcy. My heart sank when the customer asked a question, " what have I got to live for now, my children are gone, they couldn't come to the funeral because they are abroad, What have I got to live for". I had no answer, I am not even authorised to give my personal opinion, I can only 'empathise with him' and comfort him, so all I could say in a choking voice, "I am sorry for your loss".
